Breaking Through Self-Doubt to Embrace Success
Before starting his journey with Brimstone Coaching Group, Joel was a successful professional held back by a sense of unworthiness—a “false ceiling” that affected his work, personal life, and spirituality. Although he appeared accomplished, Joel struggled inwardly, feeling as though he didn’t deserve his achievements. “I would avoid success and advancement,” he reflected. “Though I was successful, it didn’t feel like I deserved it.” When a friend recommended Brimstone, Joel decided it was time to explore a new approach, hoping to enjoy his blessings without the shadow of guilt.
Through coaching sessions with Chris Godfredsen, Joel engaged in a process of deep self-reflection, identifying and dismantling the “Protective Promises” that had been holding him back. Guided by candid questions, reflective homework, and an iterative coaching process, Joel learned to replace these self-imposed barriers with “Purposeful Promises,” empowering him to embrace his success confidently. “Once you see the lie, transformation can occur rapidly,” he shared, noting the clarity and direction the process provided.
Today, Joel approaches his roles as a leader, father, and husband with renewed confidence and authenticity. At work, he has driven sustainable improvements and embraced innovation, no longer held back by self-doubt. “Vocationally, I’m making a more significant impact globally and innovating beyond the limits I had set for myself,” he reflected. Beyond his career, this transformation has enriched his relationships, allowing him to show up as a supportive and authentic partner and collaborator.
Looking back, Joel describes his experience with Brimstone as “outstanding and transformative,” adding, “It’s definitely a process I will repeat.” For anyone considering coaching with Brimstone, he advises, “Lean into the process. It leads to healthier employees, better engagement, and enriched leadership.”

Transforming Anger into Purpose
Anger is a universal experience, and many of us have had moments where it gets the best of us, leaving us with regret, remorse, or even shame. If you’ve ever found yourself lashing out in anger and later wishing you’d responded differently, you’re not alone. Like many others, I’ve been there, too. I’m Chris with Brimstone Coaching Group, and I know firsthand how exhausting it can feel when anger takes over, making us act out of impulse rather than intention.
Our autonomic nervous system plays a significant role in these responses. Designed to protect us, it reacts instinctively to threats—real or perceived—without our conscious input. When triggered, it can send us into fight-or-flight mode, an automatic response meant to keep us safe but often out of alignment with our best self. This reaction can be helpful in moments of true physical danger, but in everyday situations—like a meeting where we feel dismissed or a ballgame where we’re frustrated with a call—these instinctive responses can do more harm than good, leading to actions we may later regret.
At Brimstone, we’ve developed an approach that can help prepare us for these moments through what we call “Preferred Promises.” A Preferred Promise is an intentional commitment to how you want to show up in challenging situations, giving you a roadmap to follow before anger takes over. The process begins with asking yourself a few important questions:
What’s the threat?
How have I reacted in similar situations in the past?
What impact did that have on myself and others?
And, most importantly, how do I want to show up next time?
By creating a Preferred Promise, you’re equipping yourself to respond from a place of purpose rather than reactivity.
Living into a Preferred Promise takes time and practice, but it’s a powerful way to reclaim control and act from your true self.
